MEC calls on motorists to be cautious on the roads.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku made the call following road carnages over the weekend.
Between 13 and 16 December alone, 24 people were killed following 22 crashes on Western Cape roads. Besides the fatalities, several other people were left injured.
“These tragedies not only leave families heartbroken but also have a lasting social and economic impact on our communities,” said Sileku.
Among the 24 dead, seven were pedestrians and the MEC called for pedestrians to be vigilant when walking on the road.
He said that as a way to curb the fatalities, the Western Cape has provided a 24/7 traffic officer service across all districts.
Sileku said traffic visibility combined with targeted safety education for road users and predictive technology is key to reducing injuries and fatalities.

Despite all these efforts, Sileku said government’s efforts alone are not enough.
“We need every resident in the province to work with us in creating safer roads,” he said.
Over the weekend, traffic services in the provinces stopped 23 864 motorists at roadblocks and issued 10 495 fines for various offices including speeding, driving under the influence and driving unroadworthy vehicles.
Traffic cops impounded 26 due to failing roadworthiness checks.
Sileku said: “Most of these accidents are caused by human behaviour and could have been easily prevented if motorists were more careful on the road.”
Due to high numbers of pedestrian deaths, Sileku urged the public to only use designated places to cross roads. He said Mzansi is entering the most critical time as more people will be travelling.
“Let us all commit to practising safer road-use behaviour. Together, we can create a culture of accountability and care that prioritises and protects the sanctity of human life. The Western Cape government will continue its efforts to safeguard our roads. I urge every citizen to join us in this mission,” said Sileku.
