Mbhekiseni “Bhejane” Biyela died on Sunday, 15 December.
Biyela was mayor of the IFP-led municipality where former president Jacob Zuma lives.
News of his death was confirmed by IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa during the IFP Youth Brigade summit at the Durban ICC in KZN on Monday, 16 December.
“In the evening, we had a very unfortunate situation as a party when we lost one of our comrades and one of our mayors, comrade Mbhekiseni Bernard Biyela, commonly known as uBhejane, the mayor of Nkandla Municipality.

“I will therefore request all of us to rise for a moment of silence to honour his departure. May the soul of comrade Mbhekiseni Bernad Biyela and all those who have departed rest in peace now and forever. Amen,” he said.
Hlabisa said conveyed his condolences to the Biyela family on behalf of the IFP for borrowing Mbhekiseni to play a role in shaping communities in Nkandla and beyond.
“We will remember comrade Mbhekiseni as one of the IFP activists who never missed any by-election wherever it was held.
“We therefore convey condolences to the municipality of Nkandla for losing the person who was the face of the municipality, leading the IFP agenda. We also convey our condolence to IFP structures and constituency in Nkandla,” said Hlabisa.
