Hawks discover a hydroponic laboratory at Sebenza in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni.
A MAN is behind bars following the discovery of a hydropic dagga laboratory.Â
Ekurhuleni-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) has successfully arrested an individual involved in a significant dagga dealing operation.Â
The operation was executed on Tuesday, 10 December. Â
Hawks spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lloyd Ramovha said their members followed a tip-off received about suspected drug dealing activities in the Sebenza policing area in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni.Â
“Acting on this information, officers conducted a raid in the Croydon area.Â
“The occupant of the house, who identified himself as Hugh Herbst (39), consented to the search of the premises, which resulted in the discovery of a hydroponic laboratory and seizure of a large quantity of dagga as well as associated paraphernalia,” said Ramovha.Â

He said that, at the house, police also discovered a fully equipped hydroponic laboratory. Â
Additionally, they found various planted dagga plants, with dried and processed dagga, syringes, scales, and medium-sized clear ziplock plastic bags.Â
“Herbst admitted he did not possess a permit to manufacture or extract dagga oils and was subsequently placed under arrest.Â
“All exhibits valued at just over R150 000 were confiscated,” said Ramovha.Â
Herbst appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Thursday, 12 December, and the case was postponed to 5 March 2025, pending further investigation.Â
