Athanathi Vunati’s body was found at the Kei River Mouth, Eastern Cape, on Monday, 9 December.

A GRUESOME discovery has sent shock waves to Eastern Cape residents.

Residents are reeling from the grim discovery of Athanathi Vunati, a 22-year-old local, whose body was found at the Kei River Mouth on Monday, 9 December.

Athanathi went missing on Sunday, 8 December, and his body was found the following day.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station commander Monica Maroun reported that during ongoing search efforts at the Kei River Mouth on Monday afternoon, the South African Police Services, along with the Police K9 Search and Rescue team (comprising police divers and a K9 Unit) and the NSRI rescue swimmers, located and recovered the body of a man near the Kei River Mouth.

“The body of a man was taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services,” Maroun said.

She said police have opened an inquest docket.

“Condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of the deceased man. While the formal identification of the deceased man by the family is in progress, it’s believed the body located and recovered is that of a local 22-year-old male who went missing in the water at Kei River Mouth on Sunday while swimming with friends,” she said.

Maroun said the NSRI Kei Mouth team was activated at 3.40pm on Sunday, 8 December, following reports of a drowning in progress.

“An off-duty lifeguard, on holiday in the area and who happened to be there at the time, had entered the water to search for a local man who had gone missing while swimming.”

She said the NSRI Kei Mouth rescue swimmers, Kei Watch Action Group (KWAG) and the police responded, while the NSRI East London was placed on alert.

“The lifeguard was joined by NSRI Kei Mouth rescue swimmers where free dive search efforts revealed no signs of the missing man. NSRI Kei Mouth and KWAG members conducted shoreline search efforts.”
