Six people, including a toddler, lost their lives in a horrific accident between a truck and a light vehicle on the N3 highway.
THE crash on one of Mzansi’s busiest roads has left a trail of shock, grief, and devastation.
It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety during the festive season.
This incident occurred after six people tragically died instantly in a horrific accident on the N3 highway near Balmoral in the Free State on Friday, 6 December.
The Provincial spokesman for Emergency Services, Sipho Towa, said that paramedics swiftly rushed to the scene to assist the injured and investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The responders found that a light motor vehicle had collided head-on with a heavy motor vehicle. Four occupants of the light motor vehicle were declared dead at the scene, while one individual suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Thebe District Hospital in Harrismith.
“The driver of the truck was also declared dead on the scene. The number of fatalities is now six as authorities found the body of a toddler as they were busy with extrication,” he said.

Towa urged drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further accidents.

This unfortunate incident occurred just a few hours after the Acting Premier, Jabu Mbalula, Health MEC Monyatso Mahlatsi, and the Mangaung Metro Municipality MMC for Public Safety and Security launched the Festive Season Road Safety Campaign.
This campaign urged people to be patient and responsible in actively curbing road accidents.
MEC for Health Mahlatsi said their thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims who lost their lives in this tragic accident.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the injuries sustained in this horrific accident, and we urge all road users to exercise extreme caution on our roads.
“As the Health department, we are working closely with emergency services and hospitals to ensure that all necessary medical assistance is provided to those affected by the accident. We appeal to all motorists to be vigilant, to obey the rules of the road, and to drive defensively, especially during the festive season when our roads are busier than usual.”
Mahlatsi said that a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident would be conducted.
