TRAPPED illegal Stilfontein miners speak out.

The zama zamas, who have since resurfaced on Monday, 25 November, said they started crawling towards the exit at a nearby shaft.

They said it took them seven days to resurface and claimed they were held hostage by armed men underground.

“People are weak due to hunger. No kidnapping or detention kept them underground. We’ve been surviving on water and teabags for strength. Police have denied us access to food,” the zama zamas claimed.

Lawyers for Human Rights, led by Mametlwe Sebei, are preparing urgent court papers after a similar bid was dismissed recently.

“Each wasted hour risks hundreds of lives. Starving people and forcing potential criminals out is cruel,” Sebei said.

Meanwhile, Deputy President Paul Mashatile urged remaining underground miners to exit the Stilfontein mine.

“We don’t have equipment to force them out, but trained police are on standby. We urge them to emerge peacefully. Our goal is a lawful resolution, respecting human rights,” said Mashatile.
