My First Paycheque
In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff catches up with former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Gregory Mabena as he shares his experience of receiving his first salary in professional football.
The 46-year-old from Vosloorus retired in 2015 after his time at Baroka FC.
Before that, Mabena played for several clubs, including Free State Stars, Carara Kicks, Mpumalanga Black Aces, and Garankuwa United.
Mabena discusses how he spent his first salary after setting aside some for his family.
Who did you sign for?
“I signed for Kaizer Chiefs a long time ago, around 2007 or 2008. I had to return to the local community for a season after leaving the Kaizer Chiefs development program, but I later returned and was promoted to the first team.
How much was it?
“It was a standard contract worth R6 500.”
How did you celebrate your first pay cheque?
“In our black community, it’s a tradition to first give back to the family before spending any of your first salary. I didn’t send all of it home – just a little, and kept the rest for myself.”
What did you buy for yourself?
“I treated myself to lunch, just to relax and spoil myself a bit.”
Did it last you the whole mont in professional football?
“No, it didn’t. I ran out of money in the last week before the end of the month.”
