Snl24 | Mona down! Malaika’s BIG return

Legendary Afro-pop group Malaika will perform in Thembisa on Sunday.

LEGENDARY Afro-pop group Malaika is back in the studio.

Co-founder Bongani Nchang told Daily Sun they’re happy to be back and making music. They will release a new song titled Mona.

“As people know in our songs, we always write about things that are relevant to our lives and in the community. We want everyone to relate to the songs that we write. This song is about people who are always jealous of your progress. It’s an issue when they see someone else doing great.

“When you plan on doing something, they say it won’t work. And when it works, they hide in the shadows and look from there. Now people know that we have Tsoakae Molipa, they won’t be disappointed. We’ll release it early 2025, but we’re still not sure at this time,” he said.

Bongani also revealed he returned to the industry because the people needed Malaika back.

“Malaika is my legacy. I was there right at the beginning from the drawing board where it all started. I made the promise to keep the brand alive. Yes, there was a hiccup and a pause for about 10 years. I felt like the time was right because I was mentally and emotionally ready.

“A lot happened. Of course, it wasn’t easy for me to accept and move on. But from 2022, there were a whole lot of calls for Malaika to come back. People were calling us for weddings. When I saw Tsoakae was up for the cause, I thought she’d be perfect. And when people saw us and how consistent we are, they weren’t disappointed,” Bongani said.

They will perform at the Smooth Sunday Soul Sessions at Slotjhile Pub and Shisanyama in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni on Sunday, 24 November.

“We’ll be bringing a whole lot of Malaika heat. I know a lot of people miss our sound. We’ll also be performing our new song there. Although it’s not released yet, they will be the first to hear it.

“We hope they’ll love the song. We’ve really prepared for this event, people will enjoy our set,” he said.

Bongani and former Malaika member Tshedi Mholo had been feuding these past months, with Tshedi asking for her voice to be removed from the songs.
